AI can tell you everything about your insurance. It can't get you any of it.

If you've been asking ChatGPT about income protection, good. That's a sensible use of the tool.

Over the last couple of years, AI has done something genuinely useful for financial literacy in Australia. Questions that used to get pushed to the "I'll deal with it later" pile - what's the difference between TPD and income protection, how do waiting periods work, what happens to my policy if I change jobs - now get answered in thirty seconds, clearly, without an appointment or a sales pitch. More Australians understand their own financial situation than at any point before.

At Skye, we produce a Deep Dive every week for exactly this reason. The goal has never been to sell you something. It's to make sure you understand what you're dealing with before you make any decisions. If AI is reaching more people with better financial education, we're completely for it.

But there's a distinction worth understanding.

The Coles version of this

Think about how a supermarket actually works.

Coles doesn't just stock products. It maintains direct relationships with hundreds of producers, farmers and importers, relationships it has built over decades at a scale no individual can replicate. Those relationships are what unlock the prices, the range and the quality that end up on the shelf. You couldn't walk up to every farm that supplies your weekly shop and negotiate the same deal. The infrastructure doesn't exist for individuals. The access doesn't exist for individuals. Coles can do what it does precisely because of what it is, not just who it is.

That's not an accident. It's the design. And the design works in your favour.

The financial advice system works in a similar way, deliberately. Life insurance in Australia is sold through three distinct channels. Direct, meaning you buy online or by phone without any advice. Group, which is the default cover sitting inside your super fund. And retail, or "advised" insurance, which is sold exclusively through licensed financial advisers.

Those retail products are not available to anyone buying direct. Not to you, and not to any AI tool. The insurer relationships that make them possible, the underwriting access, the product terms, the ability to structure cover properly for your specific circumstances: all of it sits behind the adviser. That's not a workaround. It's the intended architecture of the system, built to ensure that when you get this kind of cover, a qualified professional with real accountability is in the room.

What the difference actually looks like

Retail policies are structurally different from what you'd find buying direct. Broader definitions. Fewer standard exclusions. A more thorough underwriting process at application that, counterintuitively, works in your favour.

With a retail policy, everything about your health and circumstances gets declared upfront. The insurer knows exactly what they're covering from day one. When a claim comes, there's very little room for dispute, because the groundwork was done properly at the start.

Direct insurance compresses that process. The application is faster, the questions are simpler, and the exclusions are wider to compensate. Product disclosure statements for direct policies routinely exclude things that retail policies cover as standard: mental health conditions, events related to drug or alcohol use, travel to countries under any government advisory. These are not edge cases for most Australians in their twenties and thirties.

The claims data reflects this. ASIC and APRA publish it twice a year, and it's publicly available through the MoneySmart Life Insurance Claims Comparison Tool. Adviser-supported retail claims are accepted at around 97 to 98 per cent for death and income protection. Direct insurance sits closer to 93 per cent, consistently, across multiple reporting periods. That gap isn't random. It's what happens when the right professional is involved from the beginning.

Information is not advice

Here's the part where AI hits its actual limit, and it's worth being clear about why.

Personal financial advice can only be provided by someone who holds an Australian Financial Services Licence, or is authorised under one. ChatGPT doesn't hold an AFSL. Neither does Gemini, or Claude, or any other AI tool currently available. None of them appear on ASIC's Financial Advisers Register. None of them can give you a recommendation that accounts for your specific income, occupation, health history, tax structure and family situation.

This isn't a technicality designed to protect the advice industry. The regulation exists to protect you. When a licensed adviser gives you personal financial advice, they carry legal accountability for it. They can be sanctioned, lose their licence, face penalties if the advice causes you harm. That accountability is the whole point. It's what separates a personalised recommendation from a very good internet search.

AI has no equivalent accountability. If it gets something wrong, there is no regulator, no complaints process, no consequence. ASIC's October 2024 report flagged that firms adopting AI without proper governance are creating real consumer risk. Human oversight, the regulator said, isn't optional. It's the legal and structural requirement. Not because AI is dangerous, but because the stakes of getting this wrong are high enough that someone needs to be on the hook for the outcome.

The relationship that matters when things go wrong

A good adviser doesn't just place the right policy and move on. They know your file: your health history, your income structure, how your cover was set up, what has changed since. When a claim comes, they're the person who knows what the insurer needs, how to lodge correctly, and how to push back if the response isn't right.

That relationship is built over years, and it's not transactional. It's a professional whose name is attached to a licence and who has genuine skin in the game every time they put a recommendation in front of you. The best advisers are already using AI to do that job better - faster research, better preparation, more time for the conversations that actually matter. AI is making advice better. It's not making it redundant.

AI will keep getting better at explaining what insurance is and how it works. That's genuinely useful. We want you using it.

But the products that actually protect you properly, the retail policies that come with real underwriting and real claim outcomes, sit on the other side of a system that was designed to work through a licensed professional. Not as a barrier. As a feature.

So the question worth sitting with is this: if the system was deliberately built to give you access to better outcomes through a qualified adviser, why would you settle for whatever you can get without one?
